Seung Hui (center) is a fellow traveller from Seoul, South Korea. We met her while enjoying the wonderful city of Palermo, Sicily. She is a university student who was spending her summer traveling all over Italy before she had to resume her studies. In our short conversation with Seung Hui over a few glasses of wine one night, we learned quite a bit about her, and where she lives. For example, she explained to us that while she is technically 21 years of age by our standards, she is actually considered 23 years old in South Korea. According to tradition, from the moment you are born, you are considered to be one year old. In addition, everybody is considered a year older once the new year (January 1st) arrives. So if you are born in late December for example, as soon as the new year arrives you will already be considered two years of age; A random but interesting fact that we loved learning! She also briefly educated us on North and South Korean tensions, explaining that most average citizens of South Korea have no emotional resentment towards the North. In fact, most of them just feel sad for the Northerners that don’t have the same freedoms as they do. She expressed many times that she wish the tensions would simply subside. Seung Hui was on her last week of summer travel when we met her, and she was traveling all the way up until the day before she had to return to University!
