We met Louis and Katinka in Barcelona, Spain. They currently live in Ghent, Belgium. Louis is studying Law, and Katinka is studying to become an Ophthalmology Assistant. They were on a two-week holiday together in Barcelona, taking a break from their studies to enjoy the Spanish lifestyle. Between the two of them, they speak Flemish, French, English, German, and a fair amount of Spanish. We learned that often times growing up in Ghent, Flemish is considered the primary language, French is commonly taught as a second language, and English is typically the third language you learn. Louis jokingly remarked, “rich people in Belgium tend to speak more French, and play sports like Hockey.”He explained to us that where they come from, hockey is considered an “elite” sport, that tends to be reserved for the upper-class.

It was a pleasure to meet these two and would have been even more enjoyable if the hostel we stayed at would have had air conditioning! 90 degree rooms are less than stellar. Our conversation was cut short due to our desperation to get outside and catch some much needed summer breeze!
